Altezano Brothers - the coffee company taking ownership of their waste
Altezano Brothers - the specialty coffee brand driven by three brothers originally from Guatemala and El Salvador; the homeland of some of the world’s most sought after coffee. After moving to NZ at a young age, Tim, Richard and Phil Goatley have now clocked 20 years in the coffee industry. In fact, they were raised in the same communities from which most of their coffee is sourced.
But their story extends to their sustainability efforts, which is considerable. A few things they do; coffee sacks are donated to Auckland Zoo and used as bedding for the orangutans. BYO coffee cups and containers are encouraged, and customer discounts are given in return. They use as much plant-based compostable packaging as possible and implemented organic waste collection at all four sites in Auckland. In their Newmarket store alone, they have diverted 8 TONNES of organic waste from landfill in just 10 months.
“I would actually encourage any business owner to take ownership of the full lifecycle of the waste they are producing.”. Tim, you hit the nail on the head!
